What Is Personal Magnetism? (Part 2)

Author: Aaron Loh

What's in it for the people who are being magnetized? Awareness of these factors can sometimes help shape your appeal to others. The benefits people derive from associating with an individual they perceive to be personally magnetic and charismatic include the following:

- People will gravitate toward someone they perceive to be a winner because they like to bask in that person's glory. The winner factor enters the picture because magnetic people are often perceived as winners. To complicate the issue, winners are often perceived to be personally magnetic.

- People are attracted to a magnetic person because the latter arouses a positive emotional response in them. The emotional response is similar physiologically to sexual attraction or to the reaction you might have to a glorious painting, photograph, poem, or automobile. If the person attracted to you in the first place receives the anticipated emotional response, he or she will be back for more.

- People are attracted to someone they perceive as personally charismatic because they feel that the association will bolster their self-esteem. It works this way: If one person is attracted to and forms a positive relationship with another (the personally magnetic one), it means that he or she has been accepted by somebody important. And acceptance by somebody important is a major contributor to self-esteem.

- People seek out others they perceive to be personally magnetic because of a desire for affection inside or outside of the workplace. Affection enters the picture because to be liked by somebody warm and charming is a potent driver of affection.

- Similarly, people seek out others who are personally magnetic because to capture their attention is a potent form of recognition. Have you ever noticed how wealthy people fawn over athletes? Or how they proudly display photographs of themselves with athletes or other public figures? Association with a charismatic person gives many people the recognition they crave. The recognition accrues even if the magnetic person is not famous.

- Many people want to work for or with a personally magnetic individual because it energizes and motivates them. To these people it is exciting to work closely with an appealing person. Personally magnetic individuals and the organization alike benefit from the motivational surge experienced by those who want to associate with a person they consider to be highly appealing.
