Spyware - Are You Protected?

Author: David Bailey

One of the major threats to today's computing world is spyware. The startling facts are that more and more computers connected to the internet are becoming infected.

Spyware can be likened to a virus, in that, it infects a computer without the consent of the user. However, this is where the similarity ends. spyware is not data destructive, as its primary existance is to remain undetected. Spyware will more often than not "piggyback" itself on a download. One method to counteract this is to only download from sites that are known to you or are from a reputable company.

Once installed, Spyware will perform such things as, recording your browsing habits, record keystrokes and more worryingly record personal details such as credit card/banking transactions. This information will then either be used by the spyware author or sold on to an unscrupulous third party.

In order to protect yourself from spyware you will need to install a spyware blocker. As with other computer software, spyware blockers vary widely in quality.

When it comes to choosing a spyware blocker there are some essential features which must be included in the software.

Firstly, the spyware blocker software must be easy to use for the average computer user and provide a high level of help and support from the vendor. Another important feature is that the program offers real time protection. This ensures that any potential spyware trying to install itself is blocked. Another important detail to look out for is how regularly the spyware is updated. This is a crucial factor, as new spyware is being written on a daily basis and the spyware removal software is only as good as the database that it references.

Once you have taken into account the above pointers and decided on the spyware blocker to install remember to keep it updated and to run it at regular intervals.

If you follow the guidelines and are sensible in your internet behavior, then this should help reduce the risk of being infected by spyware.
