Kilimanjaro and the Rongai Route

Author: Ian Williamson

This route is a good alternative to the Marangu route. It is probably the easiest route for the first time climber and not as popular as the heavily criticized Marangu route. This route uses small tents for accommodation on the mountain. Bellow is a typical itinerary I would recommend taking an extra day to acclimatize making the whole experience more enjoyable and increasing the chances of a successful ascent. Ensure you pre-night climb is in Marangu village and not Moshi Town as Marangu Village is close to the park gate and a much higher altitude so as you sleep your body is already acclimatizing.

Day 1: Babylon Lodge: Transfer from Arusha/KIA airport to Babylon Lodge in the heart of Marangu Village for overnight.

Day 2: First Cave: Today you transfer to Kilimanjaro National Park Gate, register and begin your assent of Kilimanjaro. The days climb goes up to the first cave which is 1,800m. The climb will take 2 - 3 hours. This part of the climb passes the Crop growing area of the mountain. Overnight and dinner at a tented camp.

Day 3: Third Cave: Early in the morning, begin trekking beyond the second cave, and on to the 3rd cave. This is at an altitude of 3,800m and will take about 6 to 7 hours. The climb today is relatively difficult, passing through the forest and into the Moorland. After this long climb, Overnight in tents at the cave, where dinner will be prepared for you.

Day 4: Kibo Hut: Today continue ascending to Kibo Hut, which stands at 4,700m and takes about 3 - 4 hours. Rest early as the next part of the trek starts directly after midnight. The evening will be spent at Kibo Hut, where you will stay in the huts.

Day 5: SUMMIT: Gilmans Point and Summit: This is the most difficult part of the climb, beginning very early and up to the steep point of Gilmans Point (5,681m). From here trek onto the crater rim to see the sun rise. This part of the journey takes roughly 7 to 8 hours. Continue on to Uhuru Peak (5,896mm) and then begin your descent back to Horombo Hut 4 - 7 hours. Dinner and overnight at the Hut

Day 6: Final descent: The journey back to the park gate will take 5 - 7 hours depending on weather and speed of decent. Collect your certificate, and back to Babylon Lodge.

The climb is often combined with a Serengeti Safari or maybe go to relax on the white beaches and swim in the clear warm waters of the Zanzibar archipelago.
