Finding a Faucet that Suits Your Fancy

Author: Michael Sinclair
Looking for a quick remodel project? Switch out your faucet for an updated look at your bathroom sink. With numerous styles to choose from - such as wall mount or deck-mount, widespread or centerset and single handle or cross lever faucets - the options are endless for personalizing your bath.

'Today's faucets can dictate the look of a bathroom,' said Lin Pannell, showroom consultant for Welker McKee Supply Company, a division of Hajoca Corporation, in Cleveland, Ohio. 'Homeowners are starting to look at them as the centerpiece of their bathroom and want designs that reflect their unique decorating style.' But, with so many faucets to choose from, it can be overwhelming to know where to begin. Here are some of Pannell's tips to help you whittle down your options and make the best choice for your bath.

On Deck

According to Pannell, 'Deck-mounted faucets, or faucets that are installed at the same level as the sink, are still the most popular style today.' Typically, deck-mount faucets are available in a centerset (where the spout and hot and cold handles are combined on a single base unit) or widespread model (where the spout and hot and cold handles are all mounted separately.) Both models are designed to fit most three-hole sinks and they come in an endless array of styles.

Deck mounted faucets with a higher arching, elongated spout have made a splash in the bath in recent years. 'The high arc faucets give you more room to wash your hands, get a drink of water, or even wash your hair,' said Pannell. 'High arc styles, with their strong visual appeal, can really update the look of a bath.'

An example of a high arc faucet is the new Eva Collection from Moen. With flowing curves, tapered handles and a high-arc spout, the two-handle centerset and widespread faucets have elegant, transitional styling and are available in brushed nickel and oil rubbed bronze finishes. Plus there are complementary Eva accessories including a towel bar, towel ring, paper holder and tank lever for a coordinated look.

Up Against the Wall

'Gaining in popularity are the newer wall-mounted faucets,' said Pannell. These faucets require special installations behind the wall and cannot easily replace an existing deck-mount faucet. 'Paired with a beautifully designed vessel sink, the wall-mount faucet can make a dramatic decorating statement in the bath,' added Pannell. These styles also free-up needed counter space and ease cleaning around the sink. 'They're ideal for the discriminating consumer who has a granite or tile countertop and doesn't want to clutter the surface with a faucet.'

Make Mine a Single

But, there's more to a faucet than just a spout. Don't forget to consider the types of handles you prefer. 'The choice between a single handle and a two handle faucet is best made by considering your needs,' said Pannell. 'Single handle faucets can be easier to use and more convenient, particularly for children or individuals who may have difficulty turning a lever. This can be especially important when hands are wet and soapy or if someone in the family has arthritis or other physical limitations.'

Two handle faucets offer a broader variety of design options. 'This style is more prevalent in powder rooms or master baths, where homeowners are looking for a specific style to match a certain d'cor,' said Pannell. 'With two handle faucets, you will also have more choices of handle style, which include lever, cross, or knob.' If you like the look of a two handle faucet, but are concerned about ease of use, choose a lever style handle which is easier to manipulate and provides precise temperature adjustment.

Finishing Touches

Forget the days of the plain chrome faucet. Today's faucets add personality to any bath not only with their sleek designs, but also through a broad array of designer finish options. 'Chrome will always be a classic finish,' said Pannell. 'But new finish options can really create an eye-catching look at the sink. Surpassing chrome in popularity are brushed finishes and oil rubbed bronze,' added Pannell. 'These designer finishes cost a bit more, but they create a coordinated look and can tie into the whole d'cor of a home.'

With so many styles and options to choose from, there's sure to be a faucet that's right for you. Pannell says, 'Keep in mind what will best suit your needs, your budget and your personal style, and you can't go wrong.'
