Adapters are commonly used devices found anywhere from the home to industrial workstations. A dedicated traveller can acquire purpose built adapters that are expensive but have a female socket for multiple types of plug and interchangeable male plugs for use in various countries. These are incredibly useful for someone who travels a lot and uses a laptop computer or hairdryer etc. Also a few countries use DC current instead of the more standard AC, which can damage electrical devices not built for it.
