Wall Mirrors

Author: Ken Marlborough

"Mirror-mirror on the wall, who is the prettiest of them all?" How we always wish the right pair of pants or dress will, like Cinderella, alter us into the view we hold of ourselves through rose-tinted glasses. Every time that we pass a wall mirror in a mall or at a friends place, we are exposed and pose as we would like others to see us. The wall mirror is an emotional reflector, one of conquest, crash, self-loathing, pity and indulgence. Mirroring is the most pervasive device for the identification parade. The myth of Narcissus to be fascinated by his own image takes our eternal obsession with the mirror one step further.

According to Feng Shui wall mirrors are used to attract, redirect, or move the flow of energy in a living space. Wall mirrors are great for missing corners and to visually enhance the undersized quarters. Oak frame or metal, floor to ceiling or peer mirror to add depth to the space, in the malls or the staircase, parlors or the halls the mirror is not just a symbol of vanity but of self-awareness.

The wall mirrors showcase different facets and angles of ourselves and every revealed reflection tells a story; the story of envy and desire. It sometimes raises questions and at other times answers them in fragments, as a whole or multiplied many times over. Be it application of make-up, shaving, cutting hair, fixing one's tie, in absence of mirrors all glitz would be divorced from reality.

When looking for faults use a mirror, not a telescope, a wise man said. In the middle of all the kitsch and cacophony of the world, no matter how hard pressed for time we may be but we dont forget to spare time for mirroring ourselves.
